The Pocket Operations series is a landmark accomplishment in modern hip-hop production, proving that artistic genius is defined by technique and vision rather than high-end studio gear. Entirely produced by Raz Fresco using solely the Teenage Engineering PO-33 K.O!—a micro-sampler the size of a credit card with only 40 seconds of total sample memory and a 24-bit internal architecture.
Before this series, micro-samplers were almost universally treated by the industry as fun novelties, portable sketchpads, or toys for quick jam sessions. Raz turned that notion on its head by delivering an entire, commercially released trilogy built on a device with severe technical limits: a hard ceiling of 40 seconds of total audio memory across all 16 sample slots, playback of only 4 sounds simultaneously, an exposed circuit board, a small LCD screen, 23 tiny buttons, and two parameter knobs.

Within those fractions of seconds of remaining memory, Raz sampled, pitched, time-stretched, and arranged entire multi-layered boom-bap beats — plus drum breaks and vocal chops — then routed the sequences through a Roland SP-404SX for added compression before recording. Most beatmakers who use the PO-33 create brief beat clips for social media; Raz went several steps further, recording full-length vocal albums over these micro-sampler beats and filling them with guest verses from underground heavyweights.
By proving that high-caliber art could be squeezed out of a $90 micro-calculator, Raz caught the attention of the manufacturer itself. Teenage Engineering officially partnered with Raz Fresco, bringing him on as a brand affiliate and featured artist — a transition from independent rapper using their gear to key global ambassador for their field recording systems and portable hardware line.
